Examining the outcomes of zero-fee education in building a resilient, inclusive economy in Drayton Valley
Drayton Valley has long been susceptible to the boom-and-bust cycles of oil and gas. Since the 2014 oil price collapse, the town has experienced significant recession. To build an economy less susceptible to threats and shocks, in 2019 the town developed the zero-fee tuition program—a radical and daring approach to economic diversification, and the only one of its kind in Canada. In partnership with the Town of Drayton Valley, our Community-University Partnership team is exploring the development and sustainability of the zero-fee tuition model and its initial outcomes in building an inclusive economy (i.e., creating opportunities for more widely shared prosperity). To understand how zero-fee tuition "works," including how it adapts to contextual factors like the COVID-19 pandemic, we are interviewing and surveying program stakeholders (e.g., government officials, town administration) and students. In this webinar, we will share preliminary findings from our research.
